An Illawarra woman remains behind bars after police say she helped an alleged murderer hide from police following a fatal crash killing a Warrawong dad in May.

Maddison Maureen Day was arrested at her Haywards Bay home on Monday and charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder of Daniel Clulow, also known at Daniel Merrett on May 18.

Police allege the 22-year-old took part in a stand-off with arresting officers when they arrived at the home, arming herself with a “large kitchen knife”, before she was charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder and using an offensive weapon to prevent apprehension.

Day faced Wollongong Local Court in front of Magistrate Susan McGowan on Wednesday, where she did not apply for bail, waving to her father who sat in the back of the courtroom.

The young woman was the sixth person charged in relation to the alleged murder of Mr Clulow, who was killed after the vehicle he was travelling in was allegedly chased and shot at before it crashed into a turning petrol tanker at Albion Park Rail.

The car’s driver Kayleen Merrett and passengers Jakaya Clulow and Thomas Johnson were also seriously injured in the crash.

Police allege the vehicle Mr Clulow was travelling in moments before his death was being chased by a Toyota Corolla containing Darren Butler, Andrew Russell and Holly Green, with the pursuit allegedly sparked by a disagreement over a $150 debt.

Following investigations into the incident, detectives charged Butler and Russell with murder, and Green with attempted aggravated armed robbery.

According to charge sheets, police will allege that between May 18 and May 30, Day assisted Butler while he was on the run from police, knowing about the situation he had been involved in.

Powers was Butler’s girlfriend of eight-weeks at the time of his arrest, and Day is understood to have been his girlfriend prior to that.

All six people will return to court next week.
