Cringila psychic Madeline Rose avoids court as found guilty of dozen animal cruelty crimes

A woman’s shameful mistreatment of more than 60 cats looks set to cost her a small fortune. However, the supposed psychic failed to show up to court to cop her punishment.

Psychic Madeline Rose charged with cat neglect leaves court

A woman who claims to be a psychic is on the cusp of being slammed with more than half a millions dollars in fines after being found guilty of deplorable cruelty to more than 60 felines.

Madeline Rose, 56, did not appear in Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday, three months after her “obstructionist” showing at a hearing relating to five counts of aggravated cruelty upon an animal, four counts of failing to provide vet treatment and three counts of cruelty upon an animal.

Documents previously tendered stated Rose mistreated at least 60 cats and kittens at her home, which required six to be put down.

Rose kept the cats in “dirty and unhygienic” conditions at her Cringila address which led to them being “unreasonably, unnecessarily and unjustifiably inflicted with pain, suffering and distress”.

The animals that had to be put down because it would have been “cruel to keep them alive” were allegedly suffering from myriad of conditions including chronic cat flu, neurological issues, stress, flea allergy dermatitis, periodontal infection, ocular and nasal purulent discharge, infected dental disease and general poor body condition.

The RSPCA rescued cats and kittens from Rose in March last year, with the organisation alleging 25 were suffering significant dental disease, 10 were in a poor bodily condition, nine were afflicted by upper respiratory disease, seven had conjunctivitis and four had entropion.

During the hearing, Rose refused to address the court from the microphone, instead opting to yell from the seats at the back of the court.

Rose described the court as a “kangaroo court” which did not have jurisdiction, adding “I can’t talk to anyone in this court because you’re all dead”.

In court on Wednesday, Magistrate Michael O’Brien read onto the record there were 61 cats at the address – half which were left free to roam with the others locked in cages.

Mr O’Brien said the RSPCA were greeted by an “overpowering stench of faecal matter and urine” and dirty bowls trays splayed around the place rotting meat.

The magistrate described Rose’s behaviour during the hearing as “not helpful, incoherent and obstructionist” while likening her to sovereign citizens who put forward “pseudo legal arguments” in a vain effort to circumvent the law.

The court heard Rose submitted an affidavit which included a $11.1 million and $2.2 million counter claim against the prosecution, however, Mr O’Brien said it “doesn’t address the issues” of the matter.

“A bulk of the material filed by the applicant (Rose) was incomprehensible,” Mr O’Brien said.

“There were photocopies of footprints – what relevance that has to these proceedings remains a mystery.”

During the hearing, Rose said she had proof she was the only living person in the courtroom by stating, “I have witnesses who have seen me breathe on a mirror and put my foot on a page”.

The magistrate found Rose guilty of all 12 offences and adjourned sentencing for a week because the only punishment available to him in lieu of Rose being in court were fines.

RSPCA prosecutor Patrick Schmidt told the court the organisation was seeking more than $560,000 in vet fees and $5500 in legal fees.

Mr Schmidt also submitted the RSPCA were seeking an order banning her from owning any animals with the court hearing she had acquired more cats since these charges were laid.
