Chaise Whittall charged over alleged Dapto Leagues stabbing

A young man is accused of taunting another outside Dapto Leagues Club saying ‘I’ve got something for you’ before his mate allegedly stabbed him in the arm.

A young Illawarra dad has been refused bail after he and a mate allegedly taunted and stabbed a man who was leaving a local pub with his girlfriend.

Chaise Whittall, 22, was arrested on Tuesday, after he and mate Tyson Williams allegedly followed a man from Dapto pub before stabbing him in the arm.

He faced Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday, charged with common assault and wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, where he was supported by his glamorous girlfriend.

Despite Mr Whittall’s lawyer Matt Ward arguing he be released to bail on house arrest, Magistrate Susan McGowan refused to grant bail, noting the serious nature of the charges.

In documents tendered to the court, police claimed the alleged victim was at Dapto Leagues Club with his girlfriend on February 17, when they left to withdraw money from the ATM.

They returned to the club shortly after and left around 8pm. As they did so, police allege Mr Whittall was standing at the front entrance with a group of other people.

It’s alleged Mr Whittall began to antagonise the man, saying “I’ve got something for you” and “come on let’s go”.

The alleged victim and his girlfriend walked to the venue of the carpark in an attempt to walk away from Mr Whittall, however itis alleged he continued to walk toward him, motioning a kitchen knife toward him.

As the alleged victim continued to try and avoid the confrontation, it is alleged Mr Whittall punched him in the head, before Mr Williams ran over.

When Mr Williams reached the group, police allege he and Whittall, both armed with knives, began to lunge toward the man in an “attempt to stab him”.

It is alleged as Mr Williams lunged at the man, he raised his arm to protect himself, which caused Mr Williams to allegedly stab him in the arm.

The man started bleeding profusely was taken to hospital for stitches.

Police launched an investigation and allegedly found the knife used near a drain on the Princes Highway at Dapto.

Mr Williams was arrested and charged some days later while Whittall was arrested on Tuesday, allegedly telling police “I wasn’t the one who stabbed him”.

The matter will return to court next month.
