A man has died after he was hit by a train at Fairy Meadow this afternoon.

Fairy Meadow Train Station was shut down and declared a crime scene after a man, believed to be aged between 35 and 45, died in what’s believed to be a case of “misadventure”.

NSW Ambulance Chief Inspector Norm Rees said three men, who were allegedly intoxicated, were on the platform just before 4pm when one of them was struck by the train.

“It will become part of a police inquiry but what I believe is that there was three males intoxicated and as a result of misadventure this guy has been hit by the train from the platform,” he said.

Emergency services sources say the trio were “playing chicken” when the man allegedly stuck his head out over the tracks, was hit by the train and pulled underneath it.

A nearby resident said she “heard screams” before the sound of the sound of the train pulling the brakes.

Chief Inspector Rees said the other two men involved left the scene after the tragic incident.

“We assessed them at the scene and they refused our help and left,” he said.

Several passengers, including expectant mothers, as while as the driver were treated by paramedics for shock.

More than 300 passengers were evacuated from the train while police investigated the circumstances surrounding the horrific accident.

All services on the South Coast Line were suspended between Wollongong and Thirroul but have since resumed.

“Flow on delays may be experienced and buses may supplement some services. Please allow extra travel time,” a Trainlink spokesperson said.
