Police are urging beach-goers to stay safe this long weekend after a man died in a suspected drowning at Manyana Beach yesterday afternoon.

About 4.50pm on Thursday, emergency services were called to the beach following reports a man appeared to be struggling in the water.

A passer-by pulled the 45-year-old man from the ocean and started CPR, but despite his best efforts, the man sadly died at the scene.

Inspector Susan Charman-Horton from South Coast Police District said it was a timely reminder with the warmer weather, and during the school holidays, for everyone entering the water to be mindful of conditions and to swim within their capabilities.

“As the weather heats up, more people will be visiting beaches, some of which aren’t patrolled,” she said.

“It is important to always take note of the swell and be aware of rips and beach conditions.”

Inspector Charman-Horton said her thoughts were with the Mount Colah man’s family at this time.

“We encourage everyone to enjoy the water and want everyone to return to the beach safely,” she said.

Officers attached to the South Coast Police District will prepare a report for the coroner.
