A doctor accused of bribing a drug-dependent patient with opiates in exchange for sexual acts has been slapped with additional charges relating to further incidents, and the alleged assaults of another man he treated.

Balgownie doctor Thean Soo Chin, who practices under the name Christopher Chin, is now facing 15 charges, after an additional seven charges were laid against him during an appearance at Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday.

Chin, a respected doctor who has been working at the same Balgownie practice for 19 years, is now facing five counts of aggravated indecent assault, four counts of aggravated sexual assault, two counts of sexually touching a person without consent, three counts of aggravated sexual touching and one count of aggravated indecency, relating to alleged incidents between two male patients from 2014 to 2019.

Chin, 58, was first charged in October last year, with police alleging he left one of his long-term male patients feeling “degraded and ashamed” after forcing him to perform sex acts in exchange for up to 10 boxes of opiates at a time.

The man had a drug dependency following a prior surgery, and allegedly told police he was “too worried” to report the alleged abuse, for fear that no one would believe him, and because of his dependence on prescription drugs.

However, Chin’s practice was raided on October 24, after police allege the patient secretly recorded consults with Chin, in which he allegedly touched the man sexually, and requested sex acts, according to court documents.

On Wednesday, police charged Chin with another five offences related to his alleged treatment of the man over a period of several years.

As part of the new charges, police allege that on January 10 2017, Chin grabbed the man by his crotch, and unzipped his pants to expose his genitalia in “circumstances of aggravation”.

It’s also alleged that on October 8 last year, Chin grabbed and squeezed the man’s nipple.

Police also allege a second man was indecently assaulted or touched sexually on six occasions between December 2016 and March 2019 by Chin, while he was seeing the patient in his office.

The most distressing new claims laid out in the latest court documents include that Chin allegedly rested his genitalia in the man’s hand while taking his blood pressure and that he also “pressed his groin” against the buttocks of the man in circumstance of aggravation.

Chin, who was granted bail by a Supreme Court Judge last year briefly appeared in Wollongong Local Court in front of Magistrate Susan McGowan on Wednesday, before his case was adjourned to a date early next year.

He is yet to enter pleas to any of the charges.
