NAPLAN, Illawarra primary schools: See how your school rates

The Illawarra’s top performing NAPLAN schools have been revealed following the 2019 results release. SEE HOW EVERY SCHOOL RATES.

A prestigious Wollongong school has emerged as the top performing primary school in the Illawarra area, following the release of 2019 NAPLAN test results.

The dedication of The Illawarra Grammar School’s (TIGS) Year 3 and 5 students saw an average score of 506.1 per student, the top score in schools across the Illawarra and Kiama regions.

TIGS has consistently proven itself among the top performing schools in the Illawarra, after again topping the list in 2018.

While the private school topped the leaderboard, the rest of the top three was made up of public schools.

Wollongong Public School closely followed TIGS with an average score of 505.8 per student, while Bulli Public School was the next best performing school in the Illawarra area, with students averaging a score of 498.

Primary school students in Years 3 and 5 took part in the controversial nationwide standardised test in May last year. The test is designed to measure students in literacy and numeracy and track their progress.

The National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy, better known as NAPLAN, is standardised testing taken by students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across the country every year.

The tests have proven controversial however, particularly the move from pen and paper to online, which saw widespread computer glitches and concern over the legitimacy of the students’ results.

The three largest states in the country, including NSW, Queensland and Victoria, are running reviews of the NAPLAN system, which has been operating in its current form for more than a decade.
