A man in his 70s has died after he was hit by a car in the Illawarra region. Police have called for any witnesses to come forward.

An elderly man has died after being hit by a car in the Illawarra region.

Police have launched an investigation after reports a man was struck by a car on Tongarra Rd, near Terry St, in Albion Park about 7.30pm on Wednesday.

Emergency services arrived and found a 73-year-old man. He was treated by paramedics, but died at the scene.

NewsLocal understands that the man was crossing the street at the time of the incident.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District have established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the crash.

The driver of the car – a 35-year-old man – was uninjured and taken to Shellharbour Hospital for mandatory testing.

Inquiries into the incident continue and any witnesses who have not yet come forward are urged to contact Lake Illawarra police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
