SAILING is in her blood, and Aimee Gallaway is cementing her place on top of the list of Australian champions.
The 13-year-old Berowra Waters resident is the latest nominee for the Hornsby Advocate’s Local Sports Star Awards, and recently took out the Australian All Schools Championships, where she competed against 127 other teams from across the country.

“To say the least, the competition was tricky,” Gallaway said. “I gave it my all and tried my best on the day.
“I didn’t know whether I was going to win as the competition was so tight for the entire circuit. I have never experienced as much pressure as I did in this course; it was a completely different environment.”
The Junior Sports Star nominee raced her boat, Flying Nemo, as part of the five-day competition last month.
“I am always having fun, no matter what happens,” she said. “Everyone always asked how I am so concentrated and smiling at the same time – but for me it is all about having fun.
“There was some professional boats, beautiful boats and some wild and wacky boats.
“No one ever knows how they went until the result comes in, but I focus on giving it my best shot and if I win, then that is an added bonus.”
Gallaway was one of the youngest skippers on the course, and has been sailing since the age of six.
She said her success on the course came down to a lot of “fair play and interaction with other sailors”.
