THE BEST in the junior sporting business turned out at the NewsLocal Junior Sports Star Awards overnight, and our local sportswomen dominated the competition with joint Junior Sports Star recipients announced.
10-year-old Hayley Johnston had every student from Wideview Public School cheering her on throughout the awards, after taking out 63 medals in swimming competitions across the country, in just two years of competitive swimming.
“It means a lot to me that my school nominated me,” Johnston said when receiving her award.
“ Wideview have done a lot for me and supported me no matter if I win or lose.
“It’s great to have the whole school behind me.’’
16-year-old Lauren Rebecca Clark was also awarded the top gong at the awards ceremony, with the Wahroonga resident recognised as a champion of the Hammer Throw.
“My coach said I was bad as discus and I should try hammer so it all worked out,” Clark confessed at the awards ceremony.
“I now want to increase my PBs, you can’t do more than that.’’
Clark, who came third for Hammer in the 2016 Oceania Melanesian Regional Athletics Championships, is hoping to break a 60m challenge she has set for herself this year.
A dedicated team of Junior Sports Star finalists from the Hornsby and Upper North Shore region turned out to the event, including local women’s AFL player, turned referee Laura Moran, 10-year-old tennis superstar Sean Wang and AFL champion Oliver Browne.
Young Sporting Spirit finalist and fencing champion Hannah Shen was also recognised as a finalist at the event alongside Team Spirit Finalists, the Northern Districts 13As Hockey Team, who represented NSW in the Australian Hockey Championships.
Service to Sport finalist, Kaia Parnaby was also recognised for her lifelong dedication and advocacy for softball.
The Junior Sports Star awards will be transformed into the Local Sports Star award, which will see sporting legends from across the country compete for the top spot.
