WITH fire in her eyes and redemption on her mind, Hornsby boxer Kaye Scott is gunning for Commonwealth gold.
“When I qualified for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, I’d only had three and a half years of boxing training,” the 33-year-old said.
Scott was captain of the Australian Boxing Team at the 2014 games, where she narrowly missed a medal after bowing out in the quarter-finals.
“This time around, I have a wealth of international experience behind me. I’ve improved skill wise and in terms of maturity. I’m a much more developed fighter.
“I’m going into this whole process knowing I can get a gold medal, rather than hoping and wishing I can.”
Since Glasgow Scott has carved a path for herself at the top of women’s boxing, both locally and internationally.
Last year she became Australia’s most successful amateur boxer at a World Championships when she claimed a silver medal in Kazakhstan.
Australia’s highest ranked female boxer, Scott followed up her history-making silver by dropping two weight divisions and winning the welterweight gold medal at the 2017 XII Silesian Boxing Women’s Championships.
Three months unbeaten at that division, Scott will be looking continue that streak on the Gold Coast in front of her home fans.
“It was a fair bit of hard work diet-wise, dropping down to 69kgs, but ever since I’ve been going really really well,” she said.
“I’m moving lighter on my feet and feeling very comfortable. I can’t wait to get to the Gold Coast and compete in front of the Australian fans.
“I’ve been told by a couple of former athletes that there’s nothing like a home games. I’m really looking forward to it.”
