A young northern beaches man spat blood in the faces of police officers and had no hesitation telling the police he would have murdered a man he had just brutally assaulted, a court has heard.

On Monday Avalon Beach man Oscar Van Brugge, 21, fronted Hornsby Local Court where he pleaded guilty to damaging property, assaulting a police officer and assault causing bodily harm while in the company of others.

Documents tendered to court lay out how Van Brugge found himself ripping out a hospital’s smoke detector and urinating in the police docks after his arrest.

On January 7, Van Brugge was drinking alcohol at Chatswood’s Orchard Hotel and the Monkey Bar.

Around 11pm, as he was heading back to an apartment, he spotted the victim standing in the street and “a violent confrontation” began, the court heard.

After the victim contacted police, he told them he was “jumped” by two people who “beat the s*** out of me” and also that he was armed with a butter knife.

“(The victim) took police to the front of the Mantra Apartments where there was an amount of blood on the footpath area, and said “This is where it all happened”,” court documents state.

While outside, the police saw Van Brugge leaving the apartment block with facial industries.

When police asked how he had received those facial injuries, Van Brugge responded: “Nothing happened. I slipped and fell on my face”, court documents state.

Police placed Van Brugge under arrest and he quickly became violent, spitting blood in the face of two constables and threatening the victim who was seated outside, a court heard.

At the police station, Van Brugge urinated in the docks, wiped his blood on the glass and used his handcuffs to scratch both the glass and the walls.

He was then taken to the Northern Beaches Hospital where he ripped a smoke detector from the ceiling, which removed the surrounding roof plaster as well.

While Van Brugge refused treatment, the victim was also taken to the hospital having sustained “multiple fractures to the left hand side of his face, a broken nose, a probable broken jaw (and) a possible sternum fracture,” a court heard.

In court, Van Brugge’s sentencing was delayed as he sought a sentencing assessment report. His matter will return to court for sentencing on February 15, 2023.
