A northwest Sydney man who allegedly stabbed his neighbour with a steak knife as part of a long-running dispute between the pair has asked a court for bail following his arrest.

Normanhurst man Joseph Geha, 60, appeared at Hornsby Local Court on Wednesday, where he faced a single charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The court heard there was allegedly two-year long feud between Geha and his neighbour.

The feud allegedly reached a boiling point on Tuesday night when the two men allegedly had a verbal altercation which turned physical.

Geha’s neighbour is also alleged to have at one point stood on the 60 year old’s neck, and both men wrestled on the ground.

Police allege Geha then went back to his unit, grabbed a 20cm steak knife, returned to his neighbour’s unit and stabbed his torso, leaving a 10 to 12cm deep laceration.

The court also heard Geha previously served a two years in prison for a violent offence — but his last conviction was 17 years ago, for a driving matter.

Geha’s lawyer argued his poor health, including renal problems and a host of other medical conditions, meant he should be granted bail to reside with his family.

Gehas two sons, ex wife and daughter were present in court.

The magistrate granted Geha bail to reside with one of his sons at his Leppington address under strict conditions, including house arrest — with Geha only able to leave for medical appointments or court attendance.

The court heard the neighbour remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
