New details have been revealed about a “specialist” police officer who’s job could be on the line after he was charged over an alleged assault which took place while he was off duty.

Daniel Geoffrey Turner, 44, of Potts Hill attended Hornsby Local Court today after being charged with four counts of common assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm over an incident which happened on January 25, just hours before nationwide Australia Day celebrations began.

Papers tendered in court reveal Mr Turner is being accused by police of assaulting four different people in Hornsby at about 1pm.

Those people are named in court documents include Kalle Backstrom, Leo Boland, Daniel Bates and Daniel Alexander.

According to police reports, Mr Turner is a senior constable attached to a specialist command.

NSW Police issued a statement saying Mr Turner is a senior constable attached to a specialist command and his duty status was under review.

Instead of appearing in person Mr Turner’s lawyer wrote into court, which is an option for those charged before the courts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There’s an email on file from the defendant’s solicitor in accordance with the COVID-19 protocol,” Magistrate Margaret McGlynn said at Hornsby Local Court today.

“Prosecution is seeking an adjournment for the DPP to appear.”

Prosecutor McLean confirmed the Director of Public Prosecutions was being called because “it was a conflict of interest”.

As a result, the matter was adjourned to August 19 for plea or mention.
