Results from the 2019 NAPLAN test have been revealed with a prestigious private girls school topping a list of 50 primary schools in the upper north shore.

More than half of the schools that made it in the top 10 were public schools.

Students in Years 3 and 5 participated in the nationwide standardised test in May last year with the test designed to measure students’ literacy and numeracy skills.

Across the upper north shore region Years 3 and 5 students at Abbotsleigh Junior School got an average NAPLAN score of 552.1 – making it the area’s top performing primary school.

The second best performing primary school was St Ives North Public School where the average result was 544.9 for Year 3 and Year 5 students.

The third best performing primary school was Hornsby North Public School which had an average of 544.7.

There were only four private schools which made it in the top 10 list with three of them being girls schools with the exception of Knox Grammar School.

Holy Family Catholic Primary School in Lindfield was fourth on the list.

The NAPLAN test remains controversial with the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, the federal body responsible for developing national curriculum and assessment, this year revamping the MySchool website where school’s NAPLAN results are publicly displayed.

Focus groups across the country found MySchool was difficult to navigate and was filled with technical language and jargon.

ACARA also had to further explain on the website the benefits of NAPLAN and MySchool to parents.
