MOTORISTS have supported a bid to see an inquiry conducted into increasing safety on the M1 Pacific Motorway.

The call for an inquiry comes during a trial heavy vehicle lane restriction program, which was rolled out by the NSW Government last week.

Last week, the Advocate conducted a poll of motorists and residents, asking for their opinion in suggestions for an inquiry to be conducted, after revealing two people died in crashes on the M1 between Wahroonga and the Hawkesbury River Bridge in 2016 and 2017, and a total of 64 people were seriously injured.

A total of 72 per cent of respondents supported calls for an inquiry into the 49km stretch of motorway.

The request for an inquiry comes as Hornsby resident Shannon Jones called for the same heavy vehicle lane restrictions to be imposed on Pennant Hills Rd.

“They (heavy vehicles) are consistently taking up all three lanes and slowing down traffic on an already painful road,” Ms Jones said in response to the story.

While Leonard Patchett said the restrictions imposed by the RMS was a “very token effort”.

“More needs to be done to end the age of entitlement of cars thinking that the middle lane is theirs when they are not in the process of overtaking,” he said.

“Keep left unless overtaking means exactly that — if you are not overtaking you should be in the left lane, regardless of who you are and what you’ve driving.”

An RMS spokesman said the department “regularly monitors traffic on the M1 Pacific Motorway and reviews crash data to identify where road improvements may be needed”. “Identified improvements are investigated, assessed and prioritised for future funding,” the spokesman said.

“The heavy vehicle lane restriction trial, which started on November 1, will assess potential benefits to road safety, traffic efficiency, and incident response.

“The Australian Road Research Board has been engaged to monitor and evaluate the trial.

“The trial will inform the future operation of multi-lane sections of the motorway network.”

The spokesman said restrictions on heavy vehicles using Pennant Hills Road will apply once NorthConnex opens.
