THE WAR on waste is an issue on everyone’s lips — so Hornsby Council have kickstarted their campaign with a week of recycling events across the shire.

Hornsby Council waste manager Chris Horsey revealed more than 12,700 tonnes of recycling matter is collected by residents every year.

“All of this gets delivered to a VISY recycling plant, where it is sorted into various streams and is then sold,” Mr Horsey said.

The waste manager said the ban on export of recyclables to China has cause global concerns, “but for Hornsby, we have our own services and plans to remediate these issues”.

“We are looking for new facilities and seeing what is available to us, we are conducting surveys and pop up stalls for people to have their say as part of community consultation for the new Waste Management scheme for council.”

Five events will take place in recycling hubs across Hornsby from Saturday, November 10 to Sunday, November 18, including workshops, talks, pop-up events and tours.

Hornsby Mayor Philip Ruddock said there had been a high level of support from the community on councils recycling and green waste policies.

“China was a significant venue for recyclable products, and we have been looking very carefully about how we will modify our own strategies to support recycling and prevent increases in landfill,” Cr Ruddock said.

“The recycling centre at Thornleigh is one of the first in Sydney and this is an exceedingly popular site.

“We are one of the first councils that give residents a place to recycle things that cannot go in their bin every week.”
