A motivational speaker found guilty of supplying MDMA in Sydney has told a court he wants to use his time behind bars to help improve the wellbeing of other inmates.
Charismatic 23-year-old Koray Kuroz was found guilty on three serious drug charges following a judge-alone trial in July, which included conspiracy to supply a prohibited drug (large commercial quantity) and two counts of supply prohibited drug (commercial quantity).
He was also found not guilty on a further count of supply prohibited drug (commercial quantity).
Kuroz supplied 280g of the party drug MDMA on two separate occasions in 2016 – while aged 19 – and also conspired with three co-offenders to obtain 1kg of MDMA in 2016.
The personal development coach took to social media following his guilty verdict and stated “this is the ultimate test of mental fortitude ... to be happier than ever in a f******* prison cell” and “I’ll be writing my first book in prison, I AM UNSTOPPABLE”.
The Knox Grammar graduate from Turramurra has been in custody for two weeks and appeared back in court in his prison greens on Friday for his sentence hearing.
Judge Robert Weber heard the final submissions from Kuroz’s defence lawyer and the Crown prosecutor and will hand down his sentence on September 18.
Kuroz took the stand during the sentence hearing, in front of a busy courtroom which included plenty of family and friends, and told the court he had been using his time in custody to help others.
“I’m looking for ways to support inmates in the prison for their wellbeing far beyond what is being offered,” he said.
He said he had been working as a sweeper in an area of Parklea prison where inmates were isolated for 14 days, due to COVID-19 precautions, and he had been talking to them and “providing as much support as possible”.
The court heard police made a large number of phone intercepts leading up to Kuroz’s arrest in late 2016.
The Crown prosecutor said those telephone intercepts “showed a significant degree of sourcing drugs” which included “Dutch drugs and local drugs”.
However, the court also heard Kuroz appeared to stop his involvement in drug supply five months prior to his arrest, with one intercepted message stating “I’m not doing it anymore”.
Three co-offenders were also involved in the conspiracy to obtain 1kg of MDMA in 2016 including Michael Canaan, Hossein Dehgani and Alan Stewart.
All three have been convicted and sentenced to terms of imprisonment for the conspiracy and other matters.
