A Hornsby councillor is calling for the redevelopment of the CBD’s Cenotaph Park — suggesting a proposal for a commemorative plaza featuring stories of local wartime heroes, better shade and public access.
Labor councillor Janelle McIntosh said she decided to highlight the need for upgrades at the Cenotaph Park — standing in the heart of Hornsby’s west side — while at commemorative Remembrance Day services on Sunday.
“Anyone paying their respects in the sun on Sunday and anyone that has seen past services at the Hornsby Cenotaph Park can see that there is very little when it comes to community facilities,” Cr McIntosh told the Advocate.
Cr McIntosh said she would like to see more shade in the square with increased tree planting, permanent seating and art to commemorate diggers of all wars.
“It would be an incredible opportunity to share the stories of Hornsby’s fallen through artwork, information panels and plaques,” she said.
“This isn’t something that should be done by council alone — this needs to be done in conjunction with the RSL and local service groups.”
Hornsby Council have worked on a proposals for a redesigned memorial plaza alongside Cenotaph Park.
“What I have been told is council have done the work to plan this revitalised town centre,” she said. “But it is contingent on the finalisation on the relocation of the bus interchange at the Hornsby Station.”
Hornsby resident Christopher Russell supported calls for revitalisation at the park.
“This area is in need of more seats and shade,” Mr Russell said.
The historian suggested the inclusion of trees native to battlegrounds fought at by Hornsby diggers.
“You could plant trees from different locations and display a plaque to tell people about the battleground,” he said.
