Berowra voters have followed in the footsteps of the majority of the country, returning the Liberal Party and incumbent MP Julian Leeser to power at the polls in the Federal Election.

Mr Leeser was welcomed back to the seat of Berowra with open arms as counting of the votes rolled in from 6pm on Saturday, and at the time of publication with more than 80 per cent of the vote counted, he had secured 65.8 per cent of the two-party preferred result.

“Being re-elected as the member for Berowra is a confirmation of the trust the community has in me to deliver for them,” Mr Leeser said following his re-election.

“It only increases the impetus to deliver for this community that I love.

“It has been a joy to represent this community over the last three years and I will continue to support individuals, community groups and businesses to do their best, and to contribute to the life of the community.”

Mr Leeser said within three years NorthConnex will be open, the work will have commenced on New Line Road and an upgraded Greenway Park will be up and running for the community.

He said there was a “sense of premature congratulations for the Labor Party” before the election on Saturday.

“But we could see it on the ground, the fear in people’s eyes of a Labor Government,” he said. “The Labor Party would have produced the most radical tax agenda leaving many poor and brought a recession to Australia.

“The sense of concern people had was like we have never see before and Scott has saved the country.”

Mr Leeser said he also wanted to pay tribute to former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who lost his seat of Warringah to Independent Zali Steggall.

“Tony Abbott was my boss before entering politics, a mentor and a friend,” Mr Leeser said.

“He has made a huge contribution to this country as prime minister, and his contributions will continue in private life.”

Mr Leeser said he would “personally guarantee that Scott Morrison will serve a full term” and thanked the community for supporting him.

“I have never supported the removal of any sitting Prime Minister and Scott Morrison will lead us to the next election whwere we will camapign for a second term of the Morrison Government,” he said.

WATCH THE RESULT AS IT HAPPENED:

Mr Leeser has experienced a swing of 0.7 per cent of the margin towards the Australian Labor Party candidate Katie Gompertz, who said the election result was “a shock to many”.

‘It is a time for reflection,” she said.

“Not for Labor but on the campaign itself.

“Voters state they hate negative campaigns yet this result shows that negative — and untruthful — campaigns work.”

Ms Gompertz said Labor had a “plethora of great policy that would have benefited all in society, from the worker to the parent, the business owner to the entrepreneur”.

“Even though Saturday didn’t go as expected, the Labor team in the area can hold their heads up high,” she said.

“The volunteers worked tirelessly for our message and gave their all for the cause.

“There were some amazing swings towards Labor in the northern end of the electorate and Labor actually won the Cowan booth, something definitely to be proud of.

“I will always be a voice for Labor in the Hornsby and Berowra area and seek to represent the people who feel ignored by our representatives.”

Julian Leeser and the Liberal Party previously held the very safe blue-ribbon seat with a margin of 16.4 per cent.
