CHERRYBROOK local Jordan Thompson has come out on top in a major upset against United States world number 15, Jack Sock, in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup in Brisbane.
The World Number 63, who was called in to replace Bernard Tomic in the Australian line up for the Davis Cup team, took his American rival down in four sets on Friday afternoon at Pat Rafter Arena — while Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt cheered him on from the sideline.
Thompson came out on top in the first set 6-3, but Sock rallied in the second set to make it a set apiece.
The third set came down to a tense tiebreak, with the Aussie edging out Sock 7-6, but Thompson took out the fourth set 6-4.
Thompson said representing Australia was the inspiration behind the win.
“Wearing the green and gold, there is no greater honour,” Thompson said after the match.
“Playing within myself, not trying to go too big, it’s not within my game style so trying to wear him down that's what I can do — I am fit enough to do that.”
Nick Kyrgios will take on John Isner in the Rubber two for the Davis Cup quarterfinals.
