CHERRYBROOK Technology High School teachers have had a challenge on their hands after its $10 million upgrade.
“We had to delay class for 20 minutes because we couldn’t get the students out of the classrooms,” head administration teacher Matthew Fisher said.
“They were blown away with the facilities we now have.”
From a State Government grant, the school now has creative arts and general learning spaces, refurbished science classrooms, a staffroom and upgraded basketball courts.
Each of the 27 classrooms in the new J Block building have writeable desktops, meaning students can use their desks as whiteboards, and an 86-inch interactive touch screen.
J Block also has three visual arts classrooms, a kiln room and multimedia workshop
Before the project, the school had 41 demountable buildings, more than any other school in NSW, and operated at 110 per cent capacity.
“The facilities we had just weren’t appropriate for the number of students we have and we’ve created a better learning environment for everyone,” Mr Fisher said.
The school has 2000 students despite being originally built for just 900.
School captain Daniel Monteiro welcomed the changes.
“It’s a lot more open, it
feels less like you’re stuck in a classroom,” he said.
Fellow school captain Elizabeth Miezis also gave the changes the thumbs-up.
“The practical lessons are a lot more engaging because the
teachers can walk around and you can see exactly what they’re doing,” she said.
