A terrifying mountain bike fall left a 13-year-old boy in a critical condition, as safety measures are now being questioned.
The young rider was flown to hospital after the horror accident at Hornsby Mountain Bike Trail, on Quarry Road.
The young boy suffered severe head trauma and was left in a serious condition, as onlookers describe “blood everywhere”.
The young boy suffered head injuries and was taken to The Children‘s Hospital at Westmead in a serious but stable condition on Friday.
Westmead confirmed on July 4 that the boy remained in a stable condition.
Hornsby man Paul Cleary said his 14-year-old son was riding with the boy moments before the horror crash and saw the boy convulsing.
Mr Cleary said more safety measures should be in place at the bike park to prevent a tragedy.
“You can’t prevent people from doing dangerous runs but there needs to be more signage,” Mr Cleary said.
Mr Clearly said his son felt “scared to ride” after witnessing the disturbing incident.
“We wouldn’t go back to that track,” he said.
A Mounties Care CareFlight Rapid Response Helicopter arrived with two fire trucks, ambulance and police just after 12.30pm.
“The resources involved with dealing with an incident like this are massive, I wonder what council are doing about it,” Mr Cleary said.
It isn’t the first time tragedy has struck the Hornsby trail – with several incidents leaving people with permanent injuries over the years.
In 2013, a 30-year-old rider died at Hornsby Bike Trail, however that incident was not considered to be caused by the track.
