A man who was part of a trio that allegedly sold crystal meth and cocaine on the dark web could face another serious drug charge, a court has heard.

Mathurshan Sangarathasan, of Toongabbie, was part of the group that allegedly sold the illicit drugs on the internet in exchange for cryptocurrency.

Police allege they supplied more than 2kg of the drugs between October and April.

Along with 27-year-old Sangarathasan, alleged ringleader Mayuran Devakumar, 25, and Harpreet Flora, 25, were accused of being in a darknet operation.

Cybercrime Squad detectives under Strike Force Cyans arrested the trio at Francesco Drive in Bella Vista on April 4.

Three men charged for allegedly supplying drugs on the darknet

Sangarathasan, of Toongabbie, was charged with 17 drug-supply related offences, including supplying prohibited drugs on an ongoing basis and participating in a criminal group.

At Blacktown Court on Thursday, prosecutor Reuben Van der Byl said a strictly indictable offence of commercial drug supply could be laid and would go to the district court once it was confirmed.

The matter was adjourned to May 6 when Sangarathasan is required to appear via video link.

Flora, of Glenwood, was the only man to be granted bail after being charged with participating in a criminal group contributing to criminal activity and two counts of knowingly take part in supply of a prohibited drug.

He is next due in court on May 30.

Bella Vista man Mayuran Devakumar was hit with 12 drug-supply related offences including supplying a prohibited drug (greater than a large commercial quantity) and knowingly directing a criminal group.

Court papers allege the trio supplied more than 2kg of drugs at Bella Vista, Seven Hills, Girraween and Toongabbie.

Devakumar allegedly supplied 1.96kg of meth and 3.5g of cocaine.

Sangarathasan allegedly delivered 11 packages laden with drugs – 296.12g of meth and 6g of cocaine.

Flora allegedly delivered packages containing 42.25g of meth at Seven Hills and Toongabbie in November and April 3 – a day before the arrest.

Police allege the packages were delivered under instructions from Devakumar.

Following their arrests, detectives searched their homes and seized illicit drugs, a car, drug paraphernalia, cryptocurrency wallets and electronics.

Police allege the men traded on the darknet, a commercial website that operates as a black market for selling or brokering transactions involving drugs, firearms and fraudulent documents.

Devakumar’s case will be mentioned in court on May 31.

No pleas have yet been entered.

State Crime Command’s Cybercrime Squad commander Detective Superintendent Matthew Craft said the darknet was a “unique challenge” for NSW Police Force.

“The NSW Police Force is up to the challenge posed by modern-day criminals who wish to deal prohibited drugs or other illegal commodities on the internet, and we will aggressively pursue anyone who attempts to,” he said.

“Anonymity on the darknet is no longer guaranteed.”
