A FOOTBALL team has made their school proud with their talent on the sporting field and their positive attitude off it.
St Bernadette’s Primary School in Castle Hill secured their spot in the Wanderers School Cup finals after an impressive qualifier earlier this month.
St Bernadette’s red team qualified at the Granville & District regional tournament at Binalong Park in Old Toongabbie on August 10.
St Bernadette’s red beat Sherwood Grange 6-0 followed by a 5-2 win over Toongabbie West to advance to the finals, and eventually secured a 2-1 grand final win over St Michael’s for a spot in the Cup finals.
The team was one of two that St Bernadette’s entered into the competition with the second team eventually knocked out.
St Bernadette’s Primary School teacher and team sports for gala days co-ordinator Karen Orsini said the team “thoroughly enjoyed” the tournament.
“It was a very positive day,” she said.
“The feedback we got from children and parents was that they enjoyed playing on those larger sized fields … and playing against teams they wouldn’t normally meet.”
Mrs Orsini said the group were not only talented but “humble and team orientated”.
“They developed a wonderful camaraderie among each other,” she said. “It was wonderful to see.”
Mrs Orsini said the Year 5 and 6 students showed dedication and commitment to the team, travelling regularly for training.
“The Gala Day was actually rained out the previous time so they were required to go to a lot of training sessions in the lead-up … out of school hours,” she said.
“They did our school proud.”
