It has been an incredible year for Sally Shokry.
The 14-year-old has picked up a stack of medals, broken state and regional records, achieved personal bests and won a scholarship.
Sally said she “felt proud” of her results over the season, which included winning gold medals at the NSW Combined High Schools State and Zone Carnivals, Australian All Schools Competition, and NSW Juniors and Youth Championships.
One of her proudest achievements was winning gold in discus at the Little Athletics NSW State competition and breaking the state record as well as achieving a personal best.
“It’s good to know that you can improve and I hope that it (the record) stays there for awhile,” she said.
Sally, who competes in the Under 14 Girls division, also broke the regional record for discus and shot put.
This year Sally was one of four recipients of a $500 McDonald’s scholarship.
“That was very, very cool,” she said.
She used her scholarship to attend an Australian Institute of Sport training camp.
“We learnt lots of different warm up drills and stretching drills that I think I’ll use in the future,” she said.
Sally said her club, Hills District Little Athletics, and school, Castle Hill High, had been “very supportive” and she was proud to represent them at club and school carnivals.
Sally said the strong competition in her division kept her motivated to train hard.
“There are lots of girls around the country that are throwing on par, if not better than me, so it’s good to know that I have to improve so I can keep achieving at that high level,” the up-and-coming athlete said.
