Kyra Wheatley has struck gold again, snapping up five national medals.
The Dural skier podiumed at all of her events at the Australian National Children’s Championships in Mt Hotham from August 12-14.
Wheatley, who competes in the U14 female division, spent more than two months training – including five weeks in Canada – for the competition.
Wheatley said she was “extremely excited” before the event.
“On the day of competition I am always nervous, but try to block it out with positive thoughts,” she said.
Wheatley said the level of competition at nationals was “always tough and challenging” but she felt confident in her abilities.
“Visibility wasn’t great, with lots of fog which was tough as I was skiing on a steep downhill course at Mt Hotham, which I had never skied on before,” she said.
Wheatley said she was “overjoyed” with her results; gold in Ski-X and Slalom #1, silver in Slalom #2 and Giant Slalom #2, and bronze in Giant Slalom #1.
“I am very proud of myself and I know that all the people that helped me get here today… are also very pleased with my results,” she said.
Wheatley’s achievements will be a boost towards her goal of making the national ski team, which she only just missed out on last year.
