NSW Police crack down on hooded teens at train stations after robberies, assaults

Cops are cracking down on hooded teenagers at train stations amid a rise in robberies and assaults, warning the public to call officers if they see teens with face coverings.

Cops are cracking down on hooded teens in transport hubs after an alleged robbery and assault at a Hills Metro stations.

Hills Shire police issued a public alert to residents, asking if they see teenagers in groups at train stations or other transport hubs wearing hoodies and face coverings to immediately call police.

It comes after an alleged robbery at Castle Hill Metro train station over the Kings Birthday long weekend.

Hills Police Crime Manager Detective Chief Inspector Chris Laird said a 16-year-old boy was allegedly robbed and assaulted by a group of young people in hoodies and face masks on Sunday, June 9.

He said six youths were arrested and charged with robbery over the alleged incident.

The next day, a different group of teenage boys were seen leaving a train at Castle Hill station wearing hoodies and face masks.

The group ran off once police arrived, but a number of weapons including two box cutters, a hammer, a mincing hammer and an unopened box of knives were discovered and seized by police.

Detective Chief Inspector Laird said later that afternoon, the same group were seen in hoodies and face coverings and were running towards the train station, but the group dispersed after police arrived.

Police chased the group on foot and eventually caught up with five teenage boys.

One of the teenagers, an 18-year-old, was charged with being armed with intention to commit an indictable offence, possess means of disguising face with intent to commit an indictable offence, custody of a knife in a public place and breaching bail.

Another one of the teenagers, who was a minor, was charged with breaching bail.

The 18-year-old will appear in Parramatta Local Court, while the juvenile will appear in Parramatta Children’s Court.

The remaining teenagers were told to leave the area.

Police are continuing to remind people if they see young people wearing hoods and face coverings loitering at train stations and transport hubs to contact police immediately.
