“We will stand in solidarity with our fellow communities and councils who have been affected by this disaster, to remember those who have tragically lost their lives and to pay tribute to those brave firefighters, emergency service personnel and volunteers who continue to battle the blazes,” Cr Byrne told the Hills Shire Times

“For me, they reflect the true spirit of Aussie mateship and they have done this by showing tremendous courage and by supporting others in times of great adversity.”

All other activities planned for January 26 at Bella Vista Farm, including entertainment from The Wiggles, will continue.

Australia bushfires: Huge fires merge as conditions expected to worsen

“On behalf The Hills Shire Council, I would like to extend our thoughts and prayers with the communities and people who have been devastated by the bushfire crisis,” Cr Byrne said.

“These fires have been catastrophic and it will take years for our communities and the environment to recover.

“But, I am confident of the resilience of this country and our determination to work together, collaboratively, to rebuild.”

Cr Byrne also extended recognition to firefighters, volunteers and emergency services, who have been working tirelessly and around the clock to protect lives and property.

The council has already donated $4000 to the NSW Rural Fire Service and is set to make an announcement on how it will further assist following the first meeting of councillors for 2020.

The Wiggles will still headline entertainment at Bella Vista Farm for Australia Day.

Cr Byrne said the council is working closely with the State Government following the establishment of a Local Government Bushfire Recovery Support Group to assist with disaster recovery and support operations in local communities.

“Bushfire affected councils are requiring a range of help and resources including logistics and communications, tree management, planning, cleaning, waste services, and engineering and infrastructure support,” she said.
