Hills residents are being encouraged to get tested for COVID-19 this week after a confirmed case was linked to a busy shopping centre in Sydney’s northwest.

On Monday NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant identified the Hills and Penrith local government areas as two new hotspots.

“I would encourage anyone in those local government areas, particularly with symptoms, to come forward,” she said.

The latest confirmed coronavirus case is believed to be from a staff member who worked at the retailer City Beach at the Rouse Hill Town Centre.

A spokesperson for Rouse Hill Town Centre Shopping Centre said they had a report that a “staff member from City Beach has tested positive for COVID-19”.

“City Beach management have informed us that the affected individual was present at the store on Sunday 3rd May and Tuesday 12th May.

“As a result, they have notified all staff members who have been in close contact with the individual to self-isolate for 14 days.”

It is unknown how the staff member contracted COVID-19.

NSW Health says areas are prioritised for further testing for a number of reasons including a large number of cases or community transmission with an unknown source.

There are two government-funded COVID-19 testing facilities in Sydney’s northwest - Castle Hills Respiratory Clinic and Riverstone Respiratory Clinic. To find out more details visit the NSW Health website.

The number of Hills district cases sits at 62 an increase of one in the last few weeks.
