A man on parole who stole a car from outside McDonald’s North Parramatta while the owner was inside getting a bite to eat is back behind bars.

Ahmed Saleem Momand, 24, formerly from Guildford, stole a Toyota Echo from outside the fast food outlet on Monday, January 28.

He was arrested two days later when he was pulled over in Northmead driving the stolen car.

Police caught Momand two days after the theft.

Momand was sentenced last week at Parramatta Local Court to six months imprisonment for drive conveyance taken without consent of owner.

Momand’s defence said he believed his life was in danger and that someone was after him, that was why he stole the car. He also said he was homeless at the time and needed a place to stay.

However, the magistrate said it was curious, if his life was under threat, that he only went as far as Northmead where he was found by police two days later.

Police facts stated the owner of the Toyota parked and went inside the McDonald’s about 1.30am — leaving his keys in the ignition — and returned shortly after to find his car was missing.

Momand was pulled over in the stolen car on Windsor Rd about 11.25am on January 30 after police received a stolen notification on the vehicle.

Momand appeared drug affected and was also driving on a suspended licence. He later told police he had taken cocaine, ice and cannabis.

Momand was on probation when he was arrested.

In 2015, he was imprisoned for six years with a non-parole period of three years and three months for an offence of aggravated break and enter.
