The man allegedly behind a series of armed carjacking across Sydney’s northwest — which included an attack on an elderly couple at knifepoint — has blamed his family and friends for not checking him into a psychiatric institution before the incidents.
Abdul Kaddour, 31, from Parramatta, appeared before Windsor Local Court on October 10 by video link, charged with one count of aggravated take, drive and conveyance, one count of take, drive and conveyance and one count of possession of a prohibited drug.
Police allege Mr Kaddour stole a White Hino Tipper truck from a petrol station on Windsor Rd, Kellyville Ridge around 8.30am on Friday, October 4, before driving to the intersection of Nelson and Hynds roads, Nelson, where he stopped in the middle of the road and approached a silver Toyota Yaris waiting behind the truck.
“He threatened the elderly occupants with a knife, demanding they exit the car before dragging the 78-year-old male driver from the car,” a NSW Police spokeswoman alleged.
“He sustained severe bruising. His 65-year-old wife was shaken but uninjured.”
The man is accused of driving the stolen Yaris a further 7km on Annangrove Rd, Annangrove before driving up to a police car, which officers allege he tried to break into before he was arrested.
Mr Kaddour, who was forced to be represented by legal aid after his lawyer failed to appear before Local Court Magistrate Fiona Toose, told the court he believed he was about to suffer from a “psychotic break” in the days leading up to the frightening incident.
“If my mates and family had taken me to hospital the night before, like I asked them all to, then they would have committed me to a psychiatric ward and none of this would have happened,” Mr Kaddour said in court.
“My lawyer rang me when I was at the cop shop, he told me that he was representing me and that I needed a mental health check, but I haven’t done the check and haven’t heard from him since.”
Police officers who arrested Mr Kaddour on Annangrove Rd, Annangrove allegedly found a spring-loaded flick knife and 1 gram of cannabis on his possession.
Mr Kaddour pleaded with Magistrate Toose to “let me out on strict bail conditions”, however, Ms Toose said a private psychiatric assessment and a release application was required.
“I just started a business and I will suffer if I am not released,” Mr Kaddour said.
He was refused bail and will reappear at Windsor Local Court on November 21.
