A man has been charged following an alleged assault at a junior rugby league game at Kellyville last weekend.

On Saturday, June 23, ground officials approached a 34-year-old spectator about his behaviour towards the referee. Another man approached one of the officials and punched him in the face.

A parent from the opposing team intervened and the same man approached him from behind and allegedly punched him in the head, knocking him to the ground.

The group were separated by match officials and bystanders, and the incident was reported to police.

On Parramatta Junior Rugby League’s Facebook page and the Kellyville Bushranger Junior Rugby League page both sides made statements, with Parramatta asking spectators to “show respect” for the refs and Kellyville posting new spectator rules.

“Of there is an issue with un-sportsman like comments from the crowd the referee will stop the game,” the new guidelines said.

“Due to issues of behaviour evident in society (these) actions will be followed at all games.”

Yesterday, Tuesday, July 9, the man attended Castle Hill police station and was arrested. He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and affray.

He has been granted conditional bail to appear at Parramatta Court on August 7.
