The top seven most dangerous roads in the Hills requiring urgent upgrades have been revealed.

Hills Shire Council has named the seven roads and intersections in the Hills as part of its funding application under the Blackspot and Safer Roads Programs.

The sites have been nominated based on casualty crash data in the past five years where someone has suffered injuries or died.

Council have nominated six roads where crashes have occurred at “a number of locations” and one intersection upgrade, according to a Council report in June.

The total grant funding to be applied for these projects is $2,590,000.

Most of the roads are located in rural areas including three of the seven sites in Kenthurst and two in Glenorie.

Glenhaven Road is one of the identified roads which has been the site of five crashes including a truck which smashed into a house at the junction of Glenhaven Road and Bannerman Road in April 2018.

The driver was knocked unconscious and trapped in his truck before he was taken by helicopter to hospital with critical head, facial and limb injuries.

Cliftonville Road also had the most amount of crashes at 7.

Hills Shire mayor Dr Michelle Byrne said road safety was everyone’s responsibility.

“Saving lives and reducing serious injuries on our roads is everyone’s duty. That’s why all levels of Government (Local, State and Federal) are working together to make enhancements to our road networks,” Cr Byrne said.

“We have a comprehensive Capital Works Program, and the Black Spot and the Safer Local Roads Programs is an important element in helping Council to deliver safe roads.

“These programs also create jobs and help to boost the local and national economy, which is particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

A Hills Shire Council spokeswoman said: “The funding application is being made under the Federal Government’s Black Spot Program and the NSW Government’s Safer Local Roads Program, which enables Council to make improvements to roads and street networks that have been identified as being potentially dangerous.”
