Hills Council to start on projects including Baulkham Hills netball courts

More than $5 million worth of projects including sports courts and a war memorial revamp have been allocated for suburbs in northwest Sydney.

Netball court upgrades, a war memorial and other critical projects are planned for the Hills Shire, with 34 shovel-ready improvements in the pipeline.

The council is proposing the projects to be funded under the federal government’s Local Road and Community Infrastructure program, which enables it to deliver priority projects.

There is a focus on road and community infrastructure upgrades and maintenance.

Some of the projects include a $150,000 war memorial upgrade at Balcombe Heights Estate in Baulkham Hills, $250,000 reconstruction of netball courts at Ted Horwood Reserve in Baulkham Hills, $215,000 for resurfacing four courts and a remote access control system at Les Shore Reserve in Glenorie, $660,000 renewal of pathways, border edging, stairs, irrigation and park furniture at AH Whaling Reserve Rose Garden in Baulkham Hills, $105,000 playground replacement at Glenhaven Reserve in Glenhaven ad $470,000 pavement rehabilitation at Old Glenhaven Rd in Glenhaven.

The council has already received approval for almost $1.2 million under the economy-boosting program, and will now seek to secure another $5.4 million to fund projects that were adopted for delivery during Tuesday’s council meeting.

The Hills Shire Mayor Michelle Byrne said these projects would support jobs, construction and promote economic growth across the region.

“Council has selected critical projects which will deliver immediate benefits for our whole community,” Cr Byrne said.

“Projects span from new footpaths to an upgrade of a war memorial and playground replacements.’’

She said the government’s support was needed more than ever.

“These projects will create employment and business opportunities, while fast-tracking community infrastructure, including parks and playgrounds,’’ she said.

All projects need to be completed by December 31.

Meanwhile, under a separate project, work is starting on creating “premier rugby league’’ fields at Kellyville Memorial Park.

Heavy machinery is now onsite at Kellyville Memorial Park carrying out bulk earthworks to convert a rugby league playing field into two pitches, which will be known as Fields 1 and 3.

“This extension is just a small piece in the bigger picture to transform Kellyville Memorial Park into a premier rugby league facility,” Mayor Michelle Byrne said.

“Our community is growing, and we need to provide further opportunities for play, as well as a pathway for our emerging talent to reach a representative level in their chosen sport.’’

Parramatta Eels chief executive officer Jim Sarantinos said: “We are proud to say this will become the best rugby league facility in the country.”

The works are slated for completion in December.

Works already done by the council as part of the park’s masterplan include the construction of a new playing field, refurbishment of two existing fields, construction of a carpark and access from Stone Mason Drive.

Apart from the works, Council has recently resolved to enter into a licence agreement with the PNRL for the joint redevelopment and use of Kellyville Memorial Park as a Premier Rugby League Facility.
