The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A 75-year-old man driving a vintage 1956 Daimler has died following a fatal collision with a tree in Sydney’s northwest outskirts.

Emergency services responded to reports of a car hitting a tree near the intersection of Cattai Ridge Rd and Smith Ln, Glenorie about 8.30am Sunday.

The driver received first aid but died as he was being rushed to hospital.

The stretch of road has seen a number of fatal accidents in recent years, including the death of a woman who died in 2019 following a two-car collision.

After a fatal motorcycle crash in September 2020, the former mayor of The Hills Shire Dr Michelle Byrne campaigned for a speed review on this stretch of road.

“We’ve now had a further fatal accident on Cattai Ridge Road,” Ms Byrnes said at the time.

“While the causes of these accidents are still under investigation, I am hopeful that Transport for NSW will review the speed limit and make the necessary safety changes.”

The Hills Police attended the scene of the most recent fatal crash and will prepare a brief for the coroner.

Police are asking for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact Castle Hill Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
