A 74-year-old bus driver has died in hospital after a horrific collision between a bus and a semi trailer in Sydney’s west last week.

About 11.45pm on Thursday, August 18, emergency services were called to the intersection of Davis Road and the Liverpool-Parramatta Transitway, Wetherill Park, after reports of a Kenworth semi-trailer colliding with a state transit bus.

The male bus driver was trapped in the vehicle, but was later freed by Fire and Rescue NSW.

He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene after suffering serious injuries to his leg, back and head before being taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.

According to a police statement the 74-year-old died in hospital on Tuesday about 10am, with a report being prepared for the coroner.

Four male passengers on the bus were treated for minor injuries after the crash.

Officers from the Fairfield City Police Area Command established a crime scene with specialist officers attached to the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit commencing an investigation into the crash.

The driver of the Kenworth semi-trailer, a 26-year old from Woolgoolga, was arrested and taken to Fairfield police station, charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

NSW Police indicated those charges would be upgraded following the bus drivers death, ahead of the man’s next court appearance on September 19.
