Lidcombe: Fatal car, motorcycle crash at Olympic Drive, near Childs St

An international student who was charged after the death of a motorcyclist in Sydney’s west told a court he “will be extremely careful not to repeat anything like that again’’ while applying for bail.

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

An Indian national who was charged after a motorcyclist died at Lidcombe on Monday had only been living in Australia since July 11, a court has heard.

Gurveer Singh, 23, was granted bail after he was charged with negligent driving after a 49-year-old Engadine man died after a crash between his motorcycle and the ute driven by Mr Singh.

Emergency services were called to Olympic Drive, near Childs St, Lidcombe about 7pm Monday following reports of the collision.

Police officers and firefighters conducted CPR on the motorcyclist before paramedics arrived. Paramedics provided treatment but the man could not be revived and died at the scene.

He is yet to be formally identified.

A crime scene, established by Auburn police, was examined by specialist forensic police and an investigation into the crash was launched.

Mr Singh, of Homebush West, was taken to Auburn Hospital for mandatory testing. He was then taken to Auburn police station and charged with negligent driving resulting in death.

The student, who is studying a masters of office administration through Queensland University and is studying English, was refused bail and appeared via video link before Burwood Local Court on Tuesday when a Punjabi interpreter was required to assist him.

His legal aid solicitor Elsa Hajar told the court there were no drugs or alcohol in her client’s system and he claimed the motorcyclist could have been speeding.

The prosecution attempted to oppose bail, citing Mr Singh was not an Australian citizen and was at risk of leaving the country, would fail to report on bail and would endanger the community.

Through his interpreter, Mr Singh said: “If I’m allowed to go out … I will not be driving unless I have an Australian driving licence.

“I’m quite upset because someone has died because of me. I will be extremely careful not to repeat anything like that again.’’

The court also heard how his father recently died in India.

Magistrate Richard Funston granted bail and imposed several conditions on Mr Singh, which will require him to hand his passport into Auburn police within 24 hours, not leave Australia and not drive with an international or Australian licence.

The matter will return to court on August 30.
