Renan Ernesto Reyes: Retired jewellery maker can’t explain gold knuckledusters

A retired jewellery maker was caught with a flashy weapon — a gold coloured set of knuckle dusters, and couldn’t give an answer in court when asked why he had it.

What happens when you are charged with a crime?

A Prairiewood man placed on a good behaviour bond for walking around with a knife in public has been pulled back into court after being caught with an even flashier weapon.

Renan Ernesto Reyes, 59, found himself facing difficult questions from Magistrate Stuart Devine in Fairfield Local Court earlier this week.

But Reyes remained silent after being asked why he had the gold coloured knuckledusters in a public place.

“I could send you to jail for two years,” Mr Devine warned him. “Think about that.”

Reyes told the court he was working as a jewellery maker, but is now semi-retired.

But it was his decision to carry the weapon, when he was already on a good behaviour bond, that stumped Mr Devine.

“I would have thought, given you were on a good behaviour bond for having a knife in a public place, you would have thought about having knuckledusters,” he said.

Mr Devine said there was an expectation from the community that people placed on good behaviour bonds do not commit any additional offences.

“I’m satisfied that you’ve broken those good behaviour bonds,” Mr Devine said.

Reyes was fined $750 for carrying the knuckledusters, and placed on a good behaviour bond for 18 months.

He was also fined $750 for breaching his bond for carrying a knife, and fined $500 for breaching his conditional release order after driving with his licence disqualified.
