POLICE believe a faulty air-bag was the likely cause of death of a man involved in a motor vehicle accident in Cabramatta last week.
About 12.45pm on Thursday, July 13, emergency services were called to the intersection of Mallee and Church streets, following reports of a crash.
A Honda CRV and a Toyota Celica crashed at the intersection and the driver of the Honda, a 58-year-old man, died at the scene.
The female passenger of the Honda, and the male driver and male passenger of the Celica were treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A crime scene was established and officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit investigated the accident.
Investigations have revealed the death of the man is likely due to a fault in the air-bag, causing the man to be struck in the neck by a small fragment.
Further investigations revealed the vehicle in the incident was the subject of a worldwide recall for a faulty air-bag.
Vehicle owners and drivers are urged to check the link below. If they own one of the vehicles mentioned and have not received or acted on the recall notice, do so as soon as possible: https://www.productsafety.gov.au/news/takata-airbag-recalls-affecting-australian-consumers
NSW Police continues to work closely with the ACCC, and the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development in relation to the recall of vehicles carrying the potentially fatal airbags.
The death has been reported to the NSW Coroners Court to determine if an inquest is necessary.
