A NSW Police officer charged after an investigation into data leaked to a criminal network allegedly accessed information on people involved in a fatal brawl outside the Oxford Hotel.
Senior constable Nineb Haroon, who worked in the city’s Southwest Metropolitan Region, was charged last month with five counts of accessing restricted data on internal NSW Police systems.
It is not alleged Haroon passed information to any criminal networks.
Haroon’s matter was mentioned for the first time at Fairfield Local Court on Wednesday where he pleaded not guilty to all five charges.
Police documents tendered to court allege over several months in 2022, Haroon accessed internal restricted information regarding several offenders without authorisation including Byron Brown and former South Sydney Rabbitohs junior Keidan Donovan-Phillips.
They pair were charged with affray following their involvement in a violent brawl where Evander Tuala died outside the Oxford Hotel in 2022. Neither were accused of being responsible for the fatal blow.
They were both sentenced to a community correction order, one for a period of 2 years and the other for 18 months, respectively – commencing on September 22, 2023.
Documents also allege Haroon accessed restricted data, including custody management records, for three other people who were in police custody in 2022 and also accessed internal information about The Oxford Hotel.
It is alleged Haroon did not have authorisation to access the information.
On Wednesday, Haroon did not appear in person and was represented by solicitor Ian Granter of Cardillo Gray Partners.
Despite the non-appearance, the prosecutor did not seek an arrest warrant due to the “sensitive” nature of the matter.
Haroon’s matter was adjourned to July 9.
