Revealed: Baby-faced family killer Sef Gonzales’ humiliating life behind bars

Triple killer Sef Gonzales was just 20 when he slaughtered his family in a crime that shocked Sydney. Scorned for his sins, insiders have revealed he’s mocked as a ‘jail maid’ inside Lithgow prison.

Sef Gonzales: The Baby-Faced Family Killer

Convicted family killer Sef Gonzales is a trusted reception sweeper at Lithgow Jail where he “pisses off” prison officers for smiling incessantly and persistently asking questions over menial labour tasks.

Gonzales, who was just 23 when found guilty of slashing to death his mother, father and sister with a kitchen knife in an apparent rage over their disapproval of his girlfriend, is consigned to the rear of thereception area where he’s known as the “jail maid”, sweeping floors, cleaning and tidying the area where inmates are processed.

The diminutive now 44-year-old is serving a life sentence without the possibility of release for the harrowing 2001 murders and is kept busy six hours a day stuffing parcels with inmates’ greens - two pairs of T-shirts, two sets of tracksuit bottoms and two Sloppy Joes – for officers to hand to new arrivals.

“He’s annoying, he’s always smiling and keeps asking questions about menial tasks having asked them over and over,” a source said.

“He rubs people up the wrong way for some reason, he’s always upbeat and has lots of energy and has said a few times, ‘I never did it.’

“He’s appealing his sentence, says it’s taken ages to pull the evidence together.

“He’s called the gaol maid, because he does the menial tasks but he’s at the back of the reception where he can’t have contact with anyone sorting out the prison greens and keeping the area tidy,” the source added.

“He’s extremely polite which also annoys some of the officers.”

Gonzales is confined to a 3 x 2 cell with a private outdoor area which he does not share with anyone else.

He was found guilty of murdering his parents, Teddy and Mary Loiva, and 18-year-old sister Clodine, in the family’s North Ryde home on July 10.

The Philippine-born Australian still protests his innocence and three years ago sought a royal pardon from the Attorney General lodging a request for a fourth inquiry into his conviction with the NSW Supreme Court, claiming he had fresh evidence to clear his name.

He has previously blamed the debilitating PTSD he has suffered after finding the bodies of his father Teddy, 46, mother, Loiva, 43, and sister, Clodine, 18, for the 20 years it has taken him to gather the evidence.

An appeal was dismissed in 2007, and he has since made three unsuccessful applications for an inquiry into his convictions.

“It’s the evidence that no one knows about. It’s the evidence that the jury never heard about. And that’s where the injustice is because the jury never heard about it,” Gonzales has said.

He said he will challenge his conviction on two forensic fronts: blue paint which prosecutors successfully argued was found on his jumper sleeve and matched blue paint used by the killer at the crime scene.

He maintains police withheld two additional pathologists’ reports which claim blue paint on his jumper could not be matched to the paint graffiti smeared on a wall of the North Ryde home saying “F**K OFF ASIANS KKK”.

During his trial, prosecutors tendered a pathology report stating paint found on his jumper sleeve matched the graffiti paint.

Gonzales will also challenge his father’s time of death was incorrectly calculated.

During his trial, the Crown argued Teddy died at 6.45pm. This time of death was ascertained by a forensic pathologist who measured Teddy’s body temperature the morning after the murders.

Gonzales argues the pathologist made a mistake in his calculations, and in fact, if the science is correctly applied, shows that Teddy died after 8pm – when he was at dinner in the city with a close family friend.

Police were called to the scene on the night of the murders to find Gonzalez sobbing outside and his lawyer father dead from stab wounds to his neck, chest, back and abdomen.

In the living room, his mother was lifeless from multiple knife wounds to her face, neck, chest and abdomen.

In the upstairs bedroom, Clodine was slumped under the desk where she had been studying with a slit throat and head wounds from strikes from a baseball bat. A student from Melbourne, she had come home that week for her 18th birthday.

In the days after the murders, Gonzalez inquired about his inheritance from the family’s $1.5million assets and offered his aunt in the Philippines, who managed the Gonzales estate, fake death certificates to hurry up the inheritance process.

Strike Force Tawas officers arrested him eleven months later.

On May 4, 2004 he was found guilty and sentenced to three concurrent life sentences without parole.
