Lorraine Allison: Yennora woman sentenced for attempting to sell stolen car

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A southwest Sydney woman tried to make a cool $500 by selling a car left on her street, but there was only one problem — it wasn’t hers.

Lorraine Rachel Allison told Fairfield Local Court she was simply trying to get rid of the car, which had been sitting there for some time, but just like the scrapyard she brought the Holden Astra to, Magistrate Stuart Devine wasn’t buying it.

“I don’t accept your explanation for why you sold the car,” Mr Devine said. “If you simply wanted to get rid of it, you would not have tried to collect the $500.”

Allison signed multiple forms claiming the 2005 Holden Astra was hers and negotiated a fee with a scrapyard, the court heard.

She was caught out when the scrapyard looked into the history of the vehicle, reported stolen in January. Allison tried to sell it on February 2.

A second man, Michael Hussey, is mentioned in agreed police facts for the case, and is said to have also been part of the failed sale.

When police arrived at the car yard, Hussey bolted, the facts state, while Allison stayed to face the music.

It is not Allison’s first offence either, the court heard, with her criminal record dating back to 1973.

“You’ve been committing offences as long as I’ve been alive,” Mr Devine said. “You certified you had full title to the car, and that it was not stolen. The vehicle was stolen.”

Allison pleaded guilty to attempt to dispose motor vehicle and was sentenced to a 12 month community corrections order and fined $500.
