A YOUNG man has handed himself into a Sydney police station after he was accused of involvement in the alleged abduction of a boy from the Gold Coast earlier this month.

Yu (Sunny) Zhang, 20, voluntarily attended Cabramatta police station in Sydney’s southwest after Queensland Police launched a public appeal for his whereabouts.

Police say Zhang, from South Wentworthville, can help with investigations into a shocking alleged abduction of a 12-year-old boy from Mudgeeraba on Queensland’s Gold Coast on May 12.

The young boy was allegedly abducted from a Clover Hill Dr home on May 11 before he was located in Grafton on NSW’s mid-north coast the following day.

Zhang remains in custody as his matter is listed for mention at Central Local Court tomorrow (May 24).

Detective Inspector Marc Hogan from the Gold Coast Criminal Investigation Branch told the Gold Coast Bulletin he could not reveal what role Zhang had played in the alleged incident.

“Our intention, and I’ll make it clear now, will be to charge that person with the abduction of that child,” Insp Hogan said.

A 53-year-old man believed to be Zhang’s father has already been charged in relation to the matter and remains in custody.

Zen Jie Zhang faces a string of serious charges including kidnapping the boy for ransom as well as extortion, assault causing bodily harm, and deprivation of liberty.

Police have alleged the kidnapping was due to a fallout between Zen Zhang and the boy’s family over personal loans.

Yu (Sunny) Zhang’s Facebook profile reveals he was a student at Westfield Sports High School in Fairfield West.

His posts indicate he moved from the Gold Coast to Sydney in 2011.
