The final moments of a man who died in a suspected hit and run collision has been captured on video, with the man seen exiting a grocery store before stepping onto a road in Sydney’s southwest.
About 5.46am, a man believed to be aged in his 50s, was allegedly struck by a black Honda Accord on Sackville St, near Hamilton Rd, Fairfield.
Police allege the Honda driver left the scene.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man however, he died at the scene.
The owner of Everyday grocery store, Ibrahim Al Rahmina, located near the scene of the deadly crash on Sackville St, said the man killed was a regular customer he knew as Saad and had popped into his business just minutes before the crash.
Mr Rahmina said Saad was an employee of Metro Petrol Station, another Sackville St business, and he had spoken to his son inside his grocery store that day.
When the business owner arrived at his grocery store about 9am, Sackville St was closed from the Hamilton Rd intersection with police strewn across the street.
The CCTV cameras in from the Everyday grocery store capture Saad walking down Sackville St about 5.50am.
On the footage he can be seen walking across the road, moving out of frame before a black Honda Accord makes a left turn onto Sackville St, accelerating towards him.
No collision was caught on the camera.
Ray Cataranziti was across the street when the accident took place. He has lived in his Sackville St home for more than 40 years and said he has seen many accidents at the intersection in that time.
“People were always going through the red arrows, red lights,” Mr Cataranziti said, adding the street is safer than it used to be.
While The Advance waited to cross the road, multiple cars were caught out by the red light camera.
NSW Police spokesman Jason Hogan advised people to drive to the conditions, and make sure they and their passengers get home safely.
Police have appealed for anyone with information about the incident, or who may have driven along Sackville St about 5.45am-5.50am – including those with dashcam – to contact the Crash Investigation Unit via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
