AN APARTMENT complex of more than 500 units was proposed to stand 19 storeys in the heart of Cabramatta, but Fairfield Council has ruled that’s just too tall.
Instead, at a recent Fairfield City council meeting, all nine councillors voted in favour of capping the apartment complex’s height at 15-storeys.
The planning proposal – submitted by Moon Investments for the intersection of Broomfield Street and Cabramatta Road East – has otherwise been endorsed by Fairfield City Council, and has progressed in the development pipeline to the NSW government.
It was pitched as a 582-unit apartment building, complete with twice as much retail and commercial space, but it’s unclear at present how the cap on the building’s height could affect the number of dwellings on the 12,847 square metre parcel of land.
The NSW government will now assess the proposal before it is exhibited to the community, where submissions can be made by the public – even those requesting hearings.
This proposal follows another on the east side of Cabramatta that was recently passed by Council. Last week, the Advance revealed 40,000 square metres of land had been rezoned to accommodate a network of buildings as high as six-storeys tall.
The FTD Holdings proposal pitched 500-650 apartments, 80-100 accessible dwellings, a 150 bed aged-care facility, a 100 place childcare centre, a medical centre and an indoor gym.
The two proposals reflect the growing population anticipated for Cabramatta, and could usher in more large-scale apartment buildings on the city’s east side.
