Two schools in Fairfield City have closed for a second time after new coronavirus infections were confirmed.
Students at Freeman Catholic College in Bonnyrigg Heights and Mary Immaculate Catholic Primary School in Bossley Park will undertake remote learning from today until August 10 after two students in Years 9 and 12 tested positive for COVID-19.
A spokeswoman for Sydney Catholic Schools said both students had been in isolation since the weekend and neither attended the reopening of the schools on Wednesday.
“After consultation with NSW Health and with their support, Sydney Catholic Schools has made the decision to return to remote learning for all students at Mary Immaculate Primary School and Freeman Catholic College,” the spokeswoman said.
“Given the online learning program was successfully administered in both schools in Term 2, this will ensure continuity of learning for all students. The health and safety of our students, staff and community as well as quality teaching and learning are our ultimate priority.”
School staff will remain onsite and the school will be open for students of essential service workers.
Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone thanked the schools for keeping the community updated.
“Both students are well but showing minor symptoms. Both students haven’t been attending class since last Thursday,” he posted on Facebook.
“NSW Health will now be contacting families to inform some students that they are ‘close contacts’ and that they will have to self-isolate.”
