A WHOPPING 160,000 potentially deadly doses of heroin were wiped off the market when police busted an alleged importation last week.
A 45-year-old Vietnamese man from Cabramatta West was charged after he allegedly imported 16kg of heroin worth $8 million in a shipment of children’s clothes and Johnnie Walker whisky from Thailand.
Police allege the man is part of an international drug smuggling ring.
He was charged at Fairfield Police Station with knowingly participating in commercial drug supply and faced court on May 18.
Drug and Firearm Squad’s Detective Chief Inspector Jason Weinstein said the seizure represented a decent dent in supply.
“We can’t stop there – we will continue our inquiries into where it came from and where it was going,” Insp Weinstein said.
“Further to that, we will harness the skills of our partner agencies, including the Australian Border Force, to stop the importation and large-scale supply of drugs which continue to plague our community.”
ABF’s NSW investigations unit Superintendent Garry Low said heroin was harmful to Australian communities.
“Keeping these illicit substances out of the hands of those who seek to make a profit from vulnerable members of our society is a high priority for the ABF,” Supt Low said.
