Airport shuttle driver charged with importing cocaine

A Cabramatta man has been taken into police custody for allegedly trying to import 2.67 kilograms of cocaine.

He is the eighth person to be arrested on drug importation charges following the formation of an inter-agency operation last year.

Chung Long Ung, a 66-year-old airport shuttle driver from Cabramatta, appeared over a videoconferencing system to face drug importation charges on June 5 at Liverpool Local Court.

Mr Ung’s legal representative said his client will apply for bail and enter a plea of not guilty.

“He maintains his innocence … and we will be fighting the charge,” Sam Karnib of Ly Lawyers said, following the hearing. “We will be fighting for our client’s innocence.”

Mr Ung was taken into police custody after being arrested at a home in Cabramatta West on June 4. Strike force detectives executed a search warrant thereafter and confiscated documents and a mobile phone.

He is the eighth person to have been arrested on drug importation charges since November 2018. A joint operation between the Australian Border Force, NSW Police and the US Department of Homeland Security has seized 61 kilograms of cocaine and methylamphetamine valued at $18.3 million.

Mr Ung will make an application for bail on Friday, June 7. His hearing is scheduled to commence on July 22.
