A man was on bail for unrelated offending when he allegedly stole several war memorial plaques from a southwest Sydney RSL, leading police on a high speed chase before crashing into a shop.
Adham Shahrouk, 34, was refused bail at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday, charged with numerous offences including two counts each of wilfully damaging or defacing protected property, destroy or damage property, stealing property valued more than $15,000, possessing property suspected of being stolen; and one count of driving recklessly and not stopping during a police pursuit.
He was also charged with possessing a prohibited drug, a prohibited weapon without a permit, housebreaking implements, having a knife in a public place; and a number of traffic offences including driving an unregistered vehicle, driving while license suspended, and driving a car with altered plates.
Shahrouk’s appearance was excused on Saturday and he is yet to enter pleas on his charges.
Police will allege Shahrouk desecrated and stole a number of war memorials including brass plaques, war memorabilia and honour boards from the Fairfield RSL club just days ahead of Remembrance Day.
In the early hours of Friday, police spotted a Toyota sedan allegedly driving dangerously along The Horsley Drive in Fairfield shortly before 2am and initiated a pursuit when the car failed to stop.
CCTV footage captures the moment the sedan ploughed into a shopfront on the corner of Station St and The Boulevarde, Fairfield Heights before catching on fire.
The driver, Shahrouk, was pulled from the car and treated at the scene while the fire was extinguished by NSW Fire and Rescue crews.
Shahrouk was taken to Liverpool Hospital for foot and leg injuries, and remains there under police guard.
The allegedly stolen items were located inside the car during a police search and will undergo forensic analysis before being returned to the Fairfield RSL club.
Shahrouk’s solicitor Zawat Zreika of Zreika and Associates, said her client would soon be undergoing surgery due to his injuries.
Ms Zreika said at the time of the alleged offending, Shahrouk had been out on bail for previous unrelated offending.
Shahrouk was refused bail to appear via audio visual link at Fairfield Local Court on November 26 for his fresh matters.
Shahrouk’s other matters were listed for December 5 at Parramatta Local Court.
